Bridges of Bedford County

We had a good day today. Started out in Hagertown and spent the morning in a couple of Antique stores there and then headed toward Bedford where we wanted to see some covered bridges. We got on the Pennsylvania Turn Pike at Breezewood and expected we could simply get off at Bedford....not so. Turns out a Turn Pike has only one exit at each major highway interchange...and it turns out there are only about three of them between Breezewood and Pittsburg. We sure didn't want to go that far and when we saw the sign that said 119 miles to the next food and gas, we knew we had to get off the highway. It's much nicer on the side roads anyway!

The landscape is quite different here because there are very few coniferous trees. The hills look nice and rounded with the leafy trees and there are no sharp mountains, just nicely rolling hills. Lots of farms and the houses are quite different too. A lot of brick houses and most are two story salt box style...is really quite interesting. We found a lovely little place that we're considering buying...it's in the heart of the Alleghenie Mountains...would be a great spot to invest all of our kids inheritance into...check out the picture!

We did see some beautiful countryside and the colours are getting richer and richer the further north/west we go. We saw two covered bridges this afternoon...see pictures below. We're heading north a few miles tomorrow and will hope to see half a dozen or so more of them...they are really quite beautiful. The first one we stopped at had a railing where we could look over the edge of the bridge into the water and the water was FULL of fish. They were probably suckers of some kind...I could pick out a couple of catfish and lots that looked like an ugly trout...those are the suckers. Anyway, was fun to see.
When we stopped at the second bridge, a lady drove up in her SUV and asked if we wanted her to take our picture in front of the bridge.....Tom said "no, we can't...we don't have a wide angle lens"......geez.....she didn't catch on at all and said "ok" and drove on. Wonder if she got it later.

We had a wonderful steak dinner tonight at a place called Ed's and are ready to relax in front of the TV for a while. I'll write more tomorrow...enjoy the pictures.
