Adamstown

Here we are in Adamstown, the Antique Capital of Pennsylvania! You can guess what we did today...yup...garage sales (found some brand new Stampin Up sets, cheap, cheap, cheap!) and antique stores. Found some wonderful stuff even if I didn't need it!

We were driving into Liditz today and saw our first Amish horse and buggy...was really quite cool. They were going amazingly fast too...clipping right along. We also saw lots of Amish folks dressed in their traditional style. The boys and men in their black trousers and straw hats and the women in their black bonnets and long dresses. Seems like the older women (probably my age) wear black all the time...good thing about that would be not having to worry what to wear each day...long black dress, white apron and black bonnet...that would be a cute work outfit, don't you think!

Saw this sign at one of our stops along the way...thought it was funny...some peoplo have such a way with words.

We went for dinner tonight at a microbrewery/restaurant/pub...it was really good. Had some excellent beer. Tom had a steak and I had a snitzel with the same kind of noodles my gramma used to make. Who knew the Dutch and the Hungarians both made the same kind of home-made noodles!

There is a huge, and I mean HUGE outdoor flea market here tomorrow so we're going to stay for that...will be fun to roam around and find more stuff we don't need. Sure wish we brought the truck! The antiques here are quite different from home...there are lots of shaker boxes, old coffee mills and butter presses....tons of pottery...much of it Pennsylvania Dutch with the gray/blue designs on it. Lots of salt glazed pottery...plenty of old, old old dolls (no, Lindsey, I'm not bringing home any more scary dolls!) I did find a couple more mustache cups for they shelf in the bathroom though...will have a nice collection of them when I'm done. Some of the handmade baskets are beautiful too, but very pricy...don't think I'll splurge on one unless I see a really good deal. I'm hoping to find some miniature dutch pottery and miniature baskets...at least that way I can take them home in my suitcase.

The weather has been ok...cloudy with bits of sunshine. We're disappointed about not seeing more colour in the trees, but guess we are a week too early. We won't have time to do all the travelling we had thought we might...there's just too much to see and do around here. Tomorrow after the flea market we'll head down to Lancaster county for more of the Amish experience...would love to see some of the quilts...saw antique ones, but it's hard to know if they are authentic or not.

Our trip is winding down way too quickly...we've only got a couple days left. I'd love to stay for a couple more weeks and just wander around out here...I don't really feel rested yet...everytime I think of going back to work I start getting stressed because we arrive late at night, then I have to be at work the next day for a meeting and it's all so rushed...we'll drive home on Wednesday morning and I'll work in the afternoon...that's the best we can do. I thought we'd be able to make it home Tuesday night, but there is no way. Anyway, it will all work out, I'm sure.

Enjoy the pictures!
