Saturday, Nov. 3/07...I think...I'm starting to lose track of the days...that's a good thing I think.
We drove from Grand Junction on the highway, which is a bit different for us, south toward a little town called Ridgeway (shown at right). We had to check out the antique stores of course...Tom's going to have to build a big box on the back of the camper to carry all our treasures!!! We turned off there and went through the San Juan National forest. It was absolutely beautiful. It's touted to be one of the most beautiful drives anywhere in the US...we were right up about 11000 ft, level with gorgeous snow covered mountains, though we didn't hit snow on the road at all. The views were spectacular. We drove through a little ski town of Teluride...Tom said a lot of the rich folks from
LA must have homes there cuz the ski lodges were beautiful...not little either...huge big homes, but vacant till the snow comes.
We drove through a couple other tiny towns like Rico and Stoner...nothing was open except the liquor store. Seems that's the biggest and most popular store in all of the towns down this way. We arrived at Cortez and drove through town...saw an antique shop and stopped. The old guy that ran the place was quite a character. Said he'd much rather be out on the road instead of running "this damn place!" Guess the store was his wife's dream, not
his. He'd been a truck driver all his life and wanted to go RVing now that he'd retired. He looked about 85 so maybe its' best he run "this damn place" than still be on the road. Anyway, he recommended the RV site down on the Ute Reserve...turns out there's a casino here too.
The site is lovely...we look west to the Trail of the Ancients and south to Mesa Verde. You can rent teepees to stay in if you wish...unless they've got electricity, I think I'll stay with the camper. We'll spend a couple days here I think. There's lots to do and see and we need a break from driving every day. The weather is gorgeous...cold in the mornings but it warms up to about 60 F during the days. Perfect for hiking and checking things out. I'm not getting a good wi-fi signal in here so will go outside and see if it's better. Will try and post some pictures. There was a beautiful sunset last night!
